Darlene | Lace-Up Mid-Calf Boots

Mid-calf is the height nobody thinks to ask for.

An ankle boot can look stubby and cut off underneath a midi hem, and a knee-high can swallow the leg entirely and leave nothing showing. Darlene stops exactly halfway between the two, which turns out to be the height that works with by far the most things already hanging in a closet.

Mid-calf shaft. It clears an ankle boot and stops well short of the knee, so it works under a midi hem and over a slim trouser. The one height that manages both.

Full lacing. The front laces from the instep all the way to the top, so the width can be set along the whole length of the leg. No gapping anywhere at the calf.

Square heel. A broad, low block that takes the weight evenly across the whole foot instead of loading the ball of it. Hours on it rather than minutes.

Rounded toe. There is genuine width across the front of the foot instead of a taper pushing the toes together. A thick winter sock still fits without crowding anything.

Most boot regret turns out to be about height rather than about quality: too short or else too tall for the clothes already hanging in the closet. This one lands squarely in the middle on purpose.
