Velvet does not have to mean a tight dress.

It has been doing that one job for so long that people forget velvet drapes beautifully when it is simply left alone and cut loose. Hedvig is cut relaxed from the shoulder all the way down, with long sleeves and no shaping anywhere in it.

Unfitted through the body. It skims from the shoulder all the way to the hem with nothing pulling across the chest, waist or hip. Comfortable enough to eat a full three-course dinner in.

Long sleeves. Covered right down to the wrist, which is most of the reason a velvet dress actually works in December. No second layer required over the top.

Soft pile surface. Velvet shifts in tone as you move through a room, so it reads as depth rather than flat fabric. It does more under evening light than anything woven.

Midi length. It sits at mid-calf, so it works over a boot, a flat or a low heel without any of them looking wrong. The hem never once becomes the problem.

Festive clothing usually asks you to be uncomfortable for five straight hours in exchange for looking the part at somebody else's party. Occasionally one lets you off that particular hook entirely, and those are the ones that get worn again.
