Sheila | Belted Longline Trench Coat

Length is what separates a coat from a jacket.

Below the knee a coat changes register entirely and starts reading as something considered rather than as something merely practical that you put on to get to the car. Sheila runs long past the knee, belts at the waist and then keeps absolutely everything else about it completely plain, which is why it works with as much as it does.

Full longline cut. It falls well below the knee, so the coat becomes the outfit rather than something covering one up. Nothing underneath has to work very hard at all.

Suede-look surface. The matte finish has real depth to it in daylight without any of the care that genuine suede quietly demands of you. Weather stops being a problem.

Self-tie belt. Pull it in for a defined waist or leave it hanging open for a long clean column. The same coat does both without ever looking undecided.

Warm brown tone. It sits against camel, cream, navy and black without arguing with a single one of them. Considerably easier to live with than a cold gray.

There is a point every autumn where the old coat comes out of the cupboard and immediately disappoints you all over again. Replacing it properly tends to last about ten years.
